TESTRecipe Reader
UNTESTED EXPERIMENT
Album scan 0.8.3 - read recipes from a Google Photos Takeout
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests (93 checks, all passing). No reading accuracy is proven, and the Takeout import has never been tried on a real device or a real Takeout archive.
- New, experimental: import a Google Takeout. After you export your Google Photos library with Google Takeout and copy the zip files to the phone, a new "Import Takeout" button lets you pick the folder holding them. The app walks each zip on the phone, photo by photo, and reads recipe photos with the same reader as a gallery scan. Zip files only in this version - .tgz/.tar archives get a clear "unsupported format" message.
- Your archives are not touched: the zips stay where they are and are never uploaded, changed or deleted. Each accepted recipe photo keeps one copy inside the app's private storage (a Takeout of many photos can take noticeable space; the app does not hold a second copy of the whole archive).
- Limits, said plainly: up to 200,000 files per zip part and 60 MB per photo; a corrupt, truncated or over-limit part is skipped with a note and the other parts continue. One very large non-photo file (over about 1 GB, such as a long video) stops that one zip part - photos already read from it stay saved.
- No new re-reads: the recipe reader itself is unchanged from 0.8.2 (no accuracy change), so previously scanned photos are not re-read by installing this. Everything 0.8.2 did - Google Photos connect, printed-title check, cut-off retry flag - is still there.
- Same one-time 2.6 GB model: no new download if you already have it. Same slowness and stop-scan behavior as 0.8.2.
- Google Photos connect is still limited: only the approved test accounts can sign in to the picker; the Takeout import needs no Google sign-in at all.
- It installs over earlier test versions. Whether saved recipes survive the update is not verified; existing recipe files are read the same as before and the new stored fields are additions only.

Album scan 0.8.2 - Google Photos connect + reading checks
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests. No reading accuracy is proven, and the Photos connection has never been tried on a real device.
- Everything 0.8.1 did: pick an album and a range; detected recipes go straight into My recipes; each new entry is cross-checked against a second text scan and carries reading notes when gaps are suspected.
- New, experimental: read photos straight from Google Photos. A "Connect Google Photos" button signs you in with Google and opens Google's photo picker; you pick the photos, they are downloaded to the phone and read there like gallery photos. Nothing is uploaded; picked photos are stored only in the app's private storage. Only the one approved test account can sign in - Google will show an "app is being tested" screen and other accounts cannot connect yet. This is expected, not a bug.
- New: printed-title check. The reader is now asked to copy the printed title first, and each new entry is checked against the second text scan. If the saved title does not seem to match the printed one, the entry carries a note saying so. A wrong title can still slip through: check against the original photo.
- New: cut-off directions get one retry and a flag. If the first AI read seems to stop before the directions end, the app asks it once to continue, and amounts it could not confirm against the second scan are marked with a warning sign. The retry can still be incomplete or wrong; it is a candidate improvement, not a demonstrated fix.
- One re-read of earlier photos: entries saved by 0.8.0/0.8.1 stay as they are. The next scan re-reads previously detected photos ONCE with the updated reader and may add a new entry alongside the old one - the new entry says so in its note. An identical result is not duplicated.
- Same one-time 2.6 GB model: no new download if you already have it. Same slowness and stop-scan behavior as 0.8.1.
- Your photos are not touched: gallery photos are never uploaded or deleted; Google Photos pictures are downloaded only after you pick them. Handwriting, Hebrew text and sideways photos can still be missed. Reads that fail are counted in the end-of-scan summary, not saved.
- It installs over earlier test versions. Whether saved recipes survive the update is not verified; existing recipe files are read the same as before and the new stored fields are additions only.

Auto-add album scan 0.8.1 - reading checks
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests. It does not fix reading accuracy and no accuracy is proven.
- Everything 0.8.0 did: pick an album and a range; detected recipes go straight into My recipes. No candidate list, no preview screens, no per-recipe confirmation.
- New: gaps get flagged instead of looking clean. Each new entry is cross-checked against a second, independent text scan of the same photo. If amounts, a whole section (like a glaze or topping), or the real directions seem to be missing, the entry carries reading notes saying what to check. Entries that look complete can still be wrong: always check against the original photo before cooking.
- New: easier to check a reading. Each new entry keeps the full text the AI read and the quick scanner's text (both on this device only, never uploaded), plus a one-line reading detail. If the AI skips or misreads part of a photo, those kept texts often still hold it - but anything neither reader captured can still be missed.
- No delete needed: entries saved by 0.8.0 stay as they are. The next scan re-reads previously detected photos ONCE with the updated reader and may add a new entry alongside the old one - the new entry says so in its note. After that one re-read, the photo is skipped again. An identical result is not duplicated.
- Same one-time 2.6 GB model: no new download if you already have it.
- Can be slow: each detected photo gets a full AI read plus a quick text scan. "Stop scanning" takes effect after the photo it is working on. Leaving the app stops the scan; recipes already added stay in My recipes.
- Your gallery photos are not touched: nothing is uploaded or deleted. Handwriting, Hebrew text and sideways photos can be missed by the first printed-word check. Reads that fail are counted in the end-of-scan summary, not saved.
- It installs over earlier test versions. Whether saved recipes survive the update is not verified; existing recipe files are read the same as before and the new stored fields are additions only.

Auto-add album scan 0.8.0
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests. It does not fix reading accuracy and it is not proven faster.
- The album scan now adds recipes by itself: pick an album and a range (newest 50, newest 200, or last 30 days up to 300). The app works through the photos and puts every detected recipe straight into My recipes. There is no candidate list, no preview screens and no per-recipe confirmation: detected recipes go straight into the book. Photos that do not look like recipes are skipped, not added.
- What "detected" means: a quick check for printed recipe words (English/Latin letters only) decides which photos get the full AI read. Handwriting, Hebrew text and some sideways photos can be missed by this first check. If the AI finds no recipe text in a photo, that photo is not added. Reads that fail are counted in the end-of-scan summary, not saved.
- Not guaranteed correct: the app marks ingredient lines it could not match to the text it read with a warning sign, and each auto-added entry says how many lines need checking. Check those lines against the original photo before cooking.
- Your gallery photos are not touched: the app stores a smaller copy in its own private storage. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is deleted. A photo already added by an earlier scan is skipped, and an identical saved recipe is never overwritten.
- Same one-time 2.6 GB model as 0.6.2/0.7.2: no new download if you already have it. Without the model, the scan only counts likely recipe photos and asks you to download it first; nothing is saved then.
- Can be slow: each detected photo gets a full AI read. "Stop scanning" takes effect after the photo it is working on (a read already running cannot be interrupted), and leaving the app stops the scan. Recipes already added stay in My recipes.
- Photo access prompt: Android will ask for photo access. Allowing only selected photos limits what the app can see, and it says so ("partial access").
- It installs over earlier test versions. Whether saved recipes survive the update is not verified; existing recipe files are read the same as before and the new stored fields are additions only.

Gallery finder and CPU/GPU speed test 0.7.2
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests. It does not fix reading accuracy and it is not proven faster.
- Find recipe photos in a gallery album: pick an album and a range (newest 50, newest 200, or last 30 days up to 300). The app checks each photo on the phone for recipe words and shows a list with the likeliest first. It only ranks: every photo is shown, nothing is hidden. Handwriting and sideways photos may rank low. Tap "Read this photo" to read one; you review it before anything is saved.
- Photo access prompt: Android will ask for photo access. If you allow only selected photos, the app sees only those and says so ("partial access"). Photos stay on the phone. The scan does not upload, save or delete anything. A "Stop scanning" button stops it between photos.
- Experimental speed test (CPU vs GPU): reads the same photo on CPU, then on GPU, and shows load time and read time separately, plus any numbers that differ. Each side reads the photo twice; compare the second read. It is one photo on one phone and proves nothing general. GPU may not work on this phone and may close the app. It stops after one GPU failure. Please do not retry repeatedly. "Stop speed test" only takes effect after the current step: a model load or read already running cannot be interrupted and can take a minute or more. Faster is not better if a quantity changed.
- Same model as 0.6.2: no additional download. The one-time 2.6 GB model download is still needed if you have not done it (Wi-Fi recommended).
- It installs over earlier test versions. Whether saved recipes survive the update is not verified; no recipe-saving code was changed.

Photo-reading AI prototype 0.6.2
This has never been run on any phone. It was only compiled and checked by unit tests. It is not a fix and not a finished release.
- What is different: the AI looks at the photo itself and copies the text. Earlier versions (0.5.3 and 0.5.4-diag below) used a separate text reader (OCR) first and gave its words to the AI. In this prototype OCR is used only if you press a separate "basic text reader" button.
- Needs a one-time 2.6 GB model download (2,588,147,712 bytes, from Hugging Face, Wi-Fi recommended, about 4 GB or more of phone RAM recommended). The app checks the file's SHA-256 and deletes it if it does not match. Photos stay on the phone.
- Risks: it may misread handwriting (unreadable words should show as [?]), it may be slow, and it may crash or close the app, possibly while loading the model. Please do not retry repeatedly.
- It installs over earlier test versions and keeps saved recipes (not tested).
Test flow: install, open the app, tap the download button once, wait for it to finish, then share one recipe photo to the app. Check every line against the card. If the app closes, reopen it and look for the "Last Read run" note at the top.

Earlier test builds
Unfinished test build, Android only.
- Version 0.5.3-test (package app.recipebox.reader.dev)
- No Instagram account connection
- Tested on one real phone: see the known issue below
- Not a finished release
Known issue in 0.5.3: reading may produce no result and close the app. Photo text recognition can misread quantities or include background text. Investigating; please do not repeatedly retry.

Diagnostic update 0.5.4-diag (does not fix reading). It adds a "Last Read run" note at the top of the app that shows how far reading got and what was recorded before the app closed, to help look for the cause. It installs over 0.5.3 and keeps your saved recipes. You do not need to press Read again first: after updating, open the app and look for the note. It stays on this device.
